Voice: Active and Passive

Another important distinction to make between verbs is whether they are active or passive. In the active voice, the subject of the sentence is the doer or agent of the action:

35a. The angry penguins attacked my best friend.

When the verb is in the passive voice, the subject of the sentence is the patient or undergoer of the action, and the BE auxiliary is used. The doer or agent of the action can optionally be added to the end of the sentence in the by-phrase, as seen in:

35b. My best friend was attacked (by the angry penguins).
